Wherever Kevin Chu goes around trade shows, he sees a lot of waste generated after only a few days of exhibition. Inspired by this, Chu and his team at Uvanart decided to design and construct a pavilion using all recycled materials. The ReLife Pavilion is composed of recycled plastic turf, derelict steel beams for structure, upcycled wood fibers as cladding panels, and 35 dead birch trees. This innovative design aims to reintroduce temporary architecture that embraces a zero waste ideology.
The ReLife Pavilion stands out due to its unique use of materials. The 35 dead birch trees, sprayed with low V.O.C white paint, serve as a focal point, highlighting the importance of plantations in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Recycled plastic turf and derelict steel I beams provide the foundation and structure, while upcycled wood fibers create the cladding panels. Low voltage LED downlights illuminate the pavilion, creating a visually striking and environmentally conscious design.
The technical specifications of the ReLife Pavilion are as follows: it measures W 6400mm x D 9000mm x H 4500mm, with a gross floor area of 5.76 SqM. The project took two months from concept to completion, with the pavilion being built specifically for the Shanghai Design Week 2018.
This design is a result of extensive research and creative problem-solving. Chu and his team were inspired by the discarded materials they encountered at trade shows and exhibitions, leading them to source and repurpose these materials for the ReLife Pavilion. One of the main challenges faced was finding the right type and breed of dried trees to suspend for the pavilion. Additionally, the team insisted on using low V.O.C and water-soluble paint to cover the trees, aligning with the environmental theme of the design.
The ReLife Recycled Pavilion serves as a reminder of the impact of human consumption on the planet. By repurposing discarded materials and incorporating sustainable practices, this design aims to initiate a more considerate thinking in the design industry. The ReLife Pavilion was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 for its outstanding creativity and resourcefulness in incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. It is a testament to the team's technical and creative skills and their contribution to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
